Creative Course Design to Foster Student Engagement.

The Humanities Edge Program invited full-time FIU Humanities faculty to apply for the first in a series of one-day seminars planned for the Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 semesters. 

The inaugural seminar was held at Florida International University on Monday, October 7, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The theme was "More Fun than Cheating: Creative Course Design to Foster Student Engagement."

In his book Cheating Lessons, James Lang argues that educators have more success promoting academic integrity by cultivating intellectually stimulating learning environments than by policing student behavior.  In that spirit, we invite faculty to submit proposals (approximately 300 words) describing assignments or activities designed to maximize student engagement.

Proposals addressed the following questions:

  • What is the activity/assignment and what inspired it?
  • How did the activity/assignment contribute to an intellectually stimulating learning environment?
  • What was the best part of the experience?
  • What might you do differently next time?

From the submitted proposals, ten faculty fellows were chosen to present at the seminar. Presentations took the form of a PechaKucha, in which presenters narrate over 20 images, each lasting 20 seconds.

Winning Proposals
