In Conversation Cristina E. Pardo Porto and Aldeide Delgado
Join us for the first public presentation of Cristina E. Pardo Porto’s eight-month fellowship project, Seeing Blue: Photography’s Histories Underwater and Oceanic Caribbean Ecologies. Pardo Porto, 2026 WOPHA Research Fellow, will present her project, followed by a conversation and audience Q&A moderated by Aldeide Delgado, Founder and Director of WOPHA.
What does it mean to think of photography from underwater—and, more specifically, from a Caribbean ecology?
Approaching photography from an oceanic Caribbean perspective, Pardo Porto’s research foregrounds the conditions that shape vision underwater, including light, depth, and movement. Here, blue emerges not simply as a color but as a physical effect of wavelength absorption, shifting attention away from representation alone and toward the environmental and historical processes that determine what can be seen and remembered in images of the Caribbean.
Free and open to the public, the program welcomes students, artists, photographers, researchers, and anyone curious about photography, Caribbean histories, and new ways of thinking about images through the ocean.

Film Screening: “An Instrumental Start: A Model for the Nation.”
This moving story traces the profound impact of the Marshall L. Davis African Heritage Cultural Arts Center (DAHCAC) on the community of Liberty City—one of the nation’s most depressed, low income and marginalized communities in the United States —through the voices of alumni, educators, and students. Among those featured are cultural luminaries who began their journey at DAHCAC: Oscar-winning playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, former Alvin Ailey Artistic Director Robert Battle and tap star Marshall Davis, Jr. Lending their voices in the film are tap legend Savion Glover and acclaimed actress/director Phylicia Rashad, and many others.
The making of An Instrumental Start: A Model for the Nation was a three–year journey across the country, collecting the voices and stories of alumni whose lives were profoundly shaped by Marshall L. Davis, Sr. and his team of teachers over five decades. Their influence reaches far beyond the walls of the Davis African Heritage Cultural Arts Center (DAHCAC). It lives on in the wisdom, artistry, and leadership that have been passed from one generation to the next.
