Public Humanities

Engaging Communities

Organized by History faculty Rebecca Friedman and Julio Capó Jr.

The Humanities Edge Program invited full-time FIU Humanities faculty to apply to present in our Public Humanities Faculty Development Seminar.

The seminar was held at Florida International University on Monday, November 18, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The theme was "The Public Face of Humanities: Engaging Communities."

We invited faculty to submit proposals describing community-based projects they have led in the Public Humanities.

Proposals answered the following questions:

  • What research projects/community engagement activities have you participated in?
  • What were some of the challenges you encountered through this process?
  • How did you engage FIU students?
  • How does your work support the goals of public humanities?

From the submitted proposals, 10 faculty fellows were chosen to present at the seminar. Each fellow delivered a 10-minute, three-slide presentation.
