The Humanities Edge and the departments of art + art history, English, and history have launched a peer mentorship program that is designed to connect students in their first years at FIU (including new transfer students) with upper-level and graduate students who can offer their support in the form of a mentorship. Students transferring with an AA are eligible to participate.
What/Who is a peer mentor?
A peer mentor is an FIU student who offers support, encouragement, and provides information and resources for you to achieve your academic goals. A peer mentor is a role model, a knowledgeable and experienced guide, a supporter and ally, a coach, and a sounding board.
Peer mentors demonstrate respect, patience, trustworthiness, and strong listening and communication skills.
A peer mentor is not an academic advisor or a therapist. If a student requires support in those areas, FIU offers academic counseling through the department’s Academic Support Services and mental health support through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).
Why participate in the Peer Mentorship program?
Developing a productive and meaningful relationship with a peer mentor enhances a sense of belonging and community at FIU and within your department; boosts interpersonal skills, self-esteem, and empathy; contributes to academic success; and positively impacts retention and graduation rates.
Peer-to-peer mentoring is a reciprocal relationship which benefits the mentor and the mentee.
What to expect?
Peer mentors and mentees should aim to meet at least one time per month. Mentors and mentees will be invited to participate in events organized by your department and/or by The Humanities Edge.
